Norton Common Skatepark1 min read

ROLE:

LOCATIONS: Letchworth Garden City

CLIENT: North Hertfordshire District Council

Background & Objectives:

This project was part of a Framework Agreement with North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) to deliver their open space improvements over five years. The skate park at Norton Common already existed but was small, tired and in desperate need of improvement of a revamp to make it more accessible to new and more experienced riders. Groundwork was asked to consult with local users and friends of groups to produce a design that worked for the riders and the local community on the ground.

Design Solution

Groundwork ran a series of on-site consultation sessions with local residents and users. Through this a design brief was created and a design and build package was released to several tenderers. The consultation groups were then asked to rate the received designs and vote as to which company they would like to go with. Groundwork then worked with the selected company to create a final design and managed the design and build process to get the new skate park on the ground. The new park was built around and included the old section of skate park to make the most of the space we had and to deliver the best value for money we could. NHDC will also run introductory BMX sessions on-site to be delivered with TESCO Bags of Help funding to help introduced new users to the sport, with some sessions focused particularly on girls to encourage them into sport.
