CLIENT: Llangollen Town Council with funding from Cory Environmental Trust & Landfill Communities Funding

Background & Objectives:

Llangollen is a small town in north-east Wales and a very popular tourist hub. This project developed a previously inaccessible space adjacent to the town’s war memorial into a welcoming and accessible public space.

One of the initial design challenges included relocating a grade one listed First World War Memorial to be a focal point of the square and overcoming significant changes of level to create access for all. As a result of the work the project has enhanced the pedestrian environment and provides an attractive space for locals and visitors using the shops, cafes and other local businesses.

Design Solution

The design includes high quality paving, public seating, street trees and a feature slate retaining wall. Lighting has been introduced which extends the use of the square and visual appeal late into the evening with illumination of the war memorial and large trees. The use of both appropriate and local materials has ensured the new square is in keeping with the historic charm, character and interest of the area.

The client was keen to address sustainability issues and potential surface water drainage of the site and therefore we included the use of SUDs design for the tree pits and paving.

The scheme was completed in time for the centenary of the end of the First World War and the square hosted the Remembrance Day service marking the occasion. This new public square has made it possible for over 30 community organisations to use the space for various events and activities such as farmers markets and during July it is used as a performance space for the International Eisteddfod; a music festival which attracts singers and dancers from around the world.
